The Big Weekend Cambridge
06 July 2012 - 08 July 2012
Three days of free entertainment on Parker’s Piece, in the-
heart of Cambridge. Friday night on the main stage features-
live music from well-known national acts and ends with a-
spectacular firework finale!
Saturday will showcase large-
scale community arts projects and performance.
Throughout-
the day on Sunday the stage will feature a range of top-
quality World Music acts. Saturday 7th July sees the arrival-
of the Olympic Torch in Cambridge. A special Olympic stage-
on Parker’s Piece will welcome the Torch on its long-
journey.

Buskers and Street Performers Festival
June/July 2012
The Buskers and Street Performers Festival is-
held every year in Cambridge by the city council in order to-
celebrate the city’s culture and the talents of local-
people.
It is a three-day event that takes place around-
June/July and invites street performers from around the area-
to play music, dance and perform in the city centre.
The-
event is free and runs during the daytime from 11am to 5pm.-
Members of the public also get the chance to vote for their-
favourite busker. This event has been running since 2008.-
The festival also aims to promote the city council’s-
Street Performers’ code of practice, which strives to-
promote busking without becoming a nuisance to tourists and-
workers.

Cambridge Folk Festival
July 2012
This event is held every year at Cherry Hinton-
Hall and attracts 10,000 people. It runs for four days at-
the end of July with camping on site.
The festival began-
in 1965 and has become famous all over the world. It offers-
a wide variety of live music across three stages – from-
folk to blues and gospel. The festival also has a youth area-
called The Hub, a crèche, a children’s concert and a-
variety of workshops. Impromptu music sessions often take-
place in the festival’s bars at night.
Previous-
headliners have included k.d lang, The Levellers, Joan Baez,-
and Joan Armatrading.
It is a family-friendly festival,-
which prides itself on clean facilities, good access for the-
disabled and plenty of rain cover. The festival is organised-
by Cambridge City Council.

Midsummer Fair
June 2012
The Midsummer Fair, held on Midsummer Common every-
June, is thought to be one of the oldest fairs in the UK,-
dating back to around 1211. The event has changed a lot-
since then and today it gives people the chance to try out-
some of the new and most thrilling fair rides around, as-
well as offering family favourites such as the dodgems,-
carousels and ghost trains.
The fair stalls offer the-
traditional line-up of fair delights such as candy floss,-
toffee apples and hot dogs. The fair takes part during the-
city council’s Summer in the City season – which stages-
a variety of music and entertainment events in the city’s-
parks.

Ely Jubilee Country Show

The Friends of Kings School Ely are holding an Agricultural-
Show at The Campus Fields, Angel Drove, Ely, to celebrate-
the Queens Diamond Jubilee and the agricultural links with-
the School. Rural Crafts, Locally produced food, Rare-
Breeds, tractors and machinery, displays such as terrier-
racing, shepherding, dog agility, falconry, wood carving,-
glass blowing will all be on display. Competitions of-
floral, art, horticulture for children and adults.

Strawberry Fair

Strawberry Fair has grown to be the most popular free music-
and arts event in Cambridge.
Strawberry Fair is a visual-
and musical extravaganza for all the family, a jamboree for-

Cambridge at Christmas
The city becomes a festival at Christmas time, with a host-
of events being organised by the City Council. An open air-
ice rink is set up in the city centre at Parker’s Piece,-
so visitors can break up their Christmas shopping trip with-
a bit of winter fun.
The Big Switch On is, of course, the-
event that sees the Christmas lights being turned on. Stages-
are set up throughout the city centre and dance, theatre and-
music groups perform all day and well into the evening. A-
Christmas parade also takes place on the day and ends at the-
switching-on ceremony.

Autumn Air Show

Closing the air show season for 2012, the Autumn Air Show-
presents a thrilling aerodynamic show with a relaxed-

Olympic Torch Relay route through Cambridge
07 July 2012 - 08 July 2012
On the evening of 7 July, the Olympic Torch will be carried-
west along Newmarket Road (A1303), turning left into-
Barnwell Road and Brooks Road (A1134) at approximately 6pm,-
before turning right to make its final approach to the city-
centre along Mill Road.
The Flame will then make its way-
through the waiting crowds on Parker’s Piece to the-
Celebration Stage, for the ceremonial lighting of the-
Olympic cauldron, launching an evening of celebration to-
mark the Olympic Flame’s arrival – a highlight of the-
city council's Big Weekend.
Early on the morning of Sunday-
8 July, the Flame will make its appearance in Great Court,-
Trinity College, to participate in the famous Great Court-
Run (featured in the 1981 film Chariots of Fire and-
recreated by Sebastian Coe and Steve Cram in 1988).
The-
Flame will then depart along the River Cam by punt,-
disembarking by Magdalene Bridge. From here it will be-
carried north out of the city via Magdalene Street, Castle-
Street and Huntingdon Road (A1307). Afte

Cambridge Folk Festival

Cambridge Folk Festival is one of the premier music events-
in Europe and one of the longest running and most famous-
folk festivals in the world. It has become hugely popular-
attracting ten thousand people, many of whom return year-
after year.
The Festival is renowned for its eclectic mix-
of music and a wide definition of what might be considered-
folk. The best traditional folk artists from the UK and-
Ireland rub shoulders with more contemporary acts, the-
finest American country, blues and roots artists, acclaimed-
singer songwriters and even the odd pop star. Bluegrass,-
gospel, cajun, zydeco, jazz, world, klezmer and a ceilidh-
are also regular features.
