Chiswick Book Festival

The Chiswick Book Festival takes place over three days in September and first began in 2009.
The event takes place in St Michael and All Angels Church and parish hall and the Tabard Theatre in Bath Road.
The list of speakers who have taken part in the festival includes Sir Terry Pratchet, Sir Andrew Motion, Val McDermid, Adele Parks and Pru Leith, among many others. Programmes have also included historian and author Michael Wood giving talks and author Charlie Higson discussing his teen novels.
Events in previous years have included various writing competitions and a Crime Fiction Tea to mark Agatha Christie’s 120th anniversary. A ‘poetry jam’ gives new talent a chance to perform alongside established poets and the Children’s Book Festival includes many different activities for young book lovers. There is also a Young People’s Poetry Competition.
The festival is supported by Waterstones bookshop as well as local firms.

Oxford Street - Christmas Lights Turn On

Every mid to late November a well known celebrity comes to Oxford Street to turn on the spectacular Christmas lights. Celebrities who have had the honour of turning on the famous Christmas lights have included the Spice Girls, the Saturdays and Jin Carrey.

Oxford Street – Boxing Day Sales

Boxing Day offers retail stores higher revenues than any other day of the year and is famous for its sales. Oxford Street is one of the busiest and most popular shopping streets in the world and the Boxing Day Sales have become legendary for the sheer volume of people who go to West Central London to try and grab a bargain. Many shops open at around 5am or even earlier to meet the demands of enthusiastic shoppers.

London International Tango Festival

The Academia Nacional del Tango (UK) and Las Estrellas Tango School/Studio host the spectacular London International Tango Festival every November.
The event attracts professional dancers from all over Europe, the USA and Latin America. The event has a full programme of performances as well as dance workshops for everyone from beginners to advanced dancers.

Ealing Summer Festivals

The programme of Ealing Summer Festivals has something for everyone and many of the events and activities take place outside in the area’s parks.
Ealing Comedy in the Park takes place on various dates in July and includes headline acts such as Terry Alderton, Omid Djalili, Sean Lock, Stephen K Amos and Milton Jones. Shows take place in the big top tent in Walpole Park. More than 25 acts take part in the festival.
Ealing Opera in the Park is held in Walpole Park for one evening in July and in the past has included performances such as Opera A La Carte’s Rigoletto.
Ealing Jazz, in Walpole Park, is five days of music including big band favourites, funky Latin flavours, jazz/funk fusion, soulful grooves and more. The Ronnie Scott Legacy Band has been one of the festival’s headline acts in the past.
Other events taking place in the Ealing Summer Festivals Programme include Ealing Global, Ealing Blues, Greenford Carnival and Acton Carnival.

Notting Hill Carnival

Caribbean rhythms take over North West London with floats, steel drums, rap, reggae and fun every August Bank Holiday at the Notting Hill Carnival. The Carnival first took place in 1966 as a local festival for the West Indian community and it has now become the largest celebration of its kind in Europe. Twenty miles are taken over for the carnival and the fun filled event attracts thousands of visitors from around the world.

Notting Hill Carnival

The streets of West London are taken over by colourful costumes and a party atmosphere every year for the world-famous Notting Hill Carnival.
The event has been taking place since 1964 and is a huge celebration of Afro Caribbean culture. The carnival is held on the August bank holiday weekend and attracts over one million people from all over the country and the world. There are events taking place all weekend, with the main parade on the Monday.
The carnival parade itself is more than 20 miles long and is the work of over 40,000 volunteers. The day also includes hundreds of food stalls and music from 40 static sound systems.
There are elaborate floats to see and traditional steel drum bands and prizes are awarded for best costumes and bands.
Stages are set up in Notting Hill over the weekend featuring live music. Big names to have played in the past include Eddie Grant, Jamiroquai and Wyclef Jean.

London Mela

This Asian style festival takes place in Gunnersbury Park, South Acton, for one day in September.
The festival is a free event with activities for all the family focussing on music, dance, visual arts and comedy. There is a food market selling tastes from around the world as well as a fun fair.
The park has three music stages for the festival, the main stage, the classical stage and the BBC Introducing Stage, which each have a packed programme throughout the day.
The BBC Asian Mix Tent has a line-up of top DJs mixing Bhangra, Bollywood, Desi Beats, Drum ‘n’ Bass and more.
Magic Mela is the children’s area at the festival and has a play area for the under fives, a family café, art workshops, storytelling, face-painting, shows and more.
The festival’s community area has dance performances and workshops and the Outdoor Arts area explores the visual arts with a variety of performances.
