Events in Sheffield
Galvanize
March-April 2013
The Galvanize festival is a month-long-
celebration of contemporary metal design and includes-
exhibitions and events in various venues in Sheffield.
It-
aims to celebrate the past, look at new innovations and-
celebrate skills in the world of metal.
Sheffield has a-
strong history of working with metal, and one of the-
festival’s highlights is tours around real working metal-
factories. Factories that have been on the list in the past-
include Ernest Wright & Son, which has been hand-making-
scissors for over 100 years, and Stuart Mitchell’s knife-
workshop, set in the historic Portland Works.
The-
festival also aims to provide visitors with hands-on-
opportunities to work with metal.
A variety of talks,-
many of which are free, provide festival visitors with a-
chance to find out more about the metal industry past and-
present. There are also open days where members of the-
public can watch pieces of jewellery being made.

Sheffield Children’s Festival
June - July 2012
Children get to see their artwork-
displayed in galleries as part of this annual event. The-
festival is run by Sheffield City Council to give young-
people the chance to work with professional artists, exhibit-
work, perform in city centre venues, take part in workshops-
and special events and enjoy performances of dance, theatre-
and music.
All the work is then showcased in venues in-
the city, through performances or exhibitions.
More than-
27,000 children took part in the 2010 festival. The festival-
aims to make art accessible to everyone.
There are events-
for schools and families to take part in and at least 60% of-
the activities are free. The event takes place in over 20-
venues across the city, including City Hall, Crucible-
Theatre, Sheffield Cathedral and Millennium-
Galleries.
Projects in the past have included a giant-
sculpture of a honeycomb - worked on by over 400 children,-
and a sports photography project involving schoolchildren-
and local athletes.

Cliffhanger
July 2012
This annual event bills itself as the outdoor-
event for outdoor people. It takes place over two days in-
July in Millhouses Park.
The outdoor pursuits festival-
attracts over 20,000 visitors and includes events and-
competitions which visitors can watch and take part-
in.
Sports that are covered at the festival include rock-
climbing, orienteering, kayaking, mountain biking, running,-
mountain boarding, skateboarding and more. There are events-
for all ages and all abilities.
Mountaineer and rock-
climber Joe Simpson, patron of the festival, said: “I am-
proud to be patron of the Cliffhanger event in my home city.-
It is really appropriate that Sheffield is hosting such a-
major event, as it is ideally placed to become the outdoor-
activities capital of this country, with a significant part-
of the city being within the Peak District National Park --
this country's most popular national park offering so many-
outdoor pursuits on the doorstep.”

Sheffield Environment Weeks
April - June 2012
This is a month-long programme of events-
in the city in April and June to celebrate the-
environment.
The event began in 1984 as a one-day-
national event sponsored by BT and run by the Civic Trust.-
Voluntary groups were invited to apply for funding to stage-
events to celebrate the environment. The national event-
eventually stopped running but Sheffield continued to put on-
events and eventually expanded to a two-week programme. As-
the number of events continued to grow, the event was-
expanded to a month in 2002.
More than 70 groups now put-
on over 200 activities during the Environment Weeks, which-
are organised by a group of volunteers and Sheffield City-
Council.
Events range from walks and activities for-
parents and toddlers to bike rides and conservation-
projects. Gardeners can listen to talks and bird enthusiasts-
can join in guided walks. Pond dipping, bug-hunting and-
treasure hunts help make the festival a family-friendly-
event.
