Inspiring Derby Week

Events in Inspiring Derby Week cover all areas including the arts and culture, history and heritage, conservation and the environment, sport and leisure, enterprise and business and health and wellbeing.
The week in July is organised by Derby City and Neighbourhood Partnerships, which is made up of organisations from the public, private, voluntary and community sectors.
Activities and events take place in neighbourhoods and in the city centre and aim to include something for everyone.
The events have included an emergency services day, various art and craft workshops, boxing and fitness workshops for all ages, a sign language workshop, a wilderness walk and a Dragons Den style contest.
Entertainment throughout the week included a Greek comedy at Eagle Market, a night of traditional and modern bhangra and an evening of dance at Déda.
Visitors were also given a chance to see behind the scenes at Kedleston Hall and enjoy a tour of Derby Roundhouse.

Derby Festè

This festival runs for three days in the city and celebrates live performance, music and film.
The celebration is held in September and attracts more than 35,000 visitors. Events take place at Westfield, Bass Recreation Ground, the Market Place and QUAD and Cathedral Green.
Live bands, street performers and acrobats liven up the city centre during the weekend. Local and international artists take part. The festivities end with a huge concert of classical music at Darley Park. Over 30,000 people attend this event, which ends with a spectacular firework display.
Other events to take place have included a Big Disco, a Sari-Sari night of Bollywood dance and music and live music from a double decker bus. Aliens and robotic monsters were seem wandering around the streets and there was an appearance by actor Robert Lindsay.

State of the Art Tattoo, Body Art and Music Festival

This event has been taking place every year in the Assembly Rooms since 2000.
The festival is organised by State of the Art Promotions and runs for two days.
More than 90 body artists from around the world take part in the event and visitors can watch or be tattooed or pierced. Thousands of visitors flock to the event in July.
Fashion and merchandise is on display in the Body Art Trade Area during the weekend.
Entertainment includes live bands and acoustic sets, burlesque shows and tattoo competitions. There is also a barbecue, bars and food outlets. A grand finale of presentations takes part on the Sunday.
Entertainment for the event has included Rob Frampton, Leela and the Spaceship, The Black Fuzz, Grasoline, Tilted Smile, Ryan Lauder and Two Skies.
A Battle of Burlesque competition was also organised, culminating in the showcase finale Delicious Burlesque on the final day. There was also a pre-show party at the Hallmark Hotel.

Alt. Fiction Literature Festival Weekend

The Alt. Fiction Festival focuses on science fiction, fantasy and horror novels and provides a programme of events for readers and writers over a weekend in June.
The festival has been taking place in the city for five years in the QUAD arts centre.
Authors do readings, signings and giveaways and take part in panels and discussions. Workshops are held to give readers a chance to learn more about the writing process and the publishing industry.
Visitors and writers travel from all over the UK to take part in the festival.
The authors taking part in the festival in have included science fiction author Peter F Hamilton, Shadows of the Apt writer Adrian Tchaikovsky, rising fantasy star Mark Charan Newton and author of the Recursion trilogy Tony Ballantyne.
The festival is organised by Writing East Midlands, a writer development agency for the region. It aims to support and discover new writers.

Bloodstock

Bloodstock Open Air heavy metal music festival began its life as the Bloodstock Indoor.
The festival was started in 2001 by two music fans in the Derby Assembly Rooms. It began as a one-day show and the headline acts included Saxon, Primal Fear, Glenn Hughes, Blaze, Skyclad and Return To The Sabbat. Around 700 people attended this first event.
By 2005, the festival had reached its maximum capacity of 2,500 people, and the Open Air element took over.
Bloodstock now takes place over three days in August and attracts over 10,000 music fans. Camping is available at the site at Catton Hall.
There are three stages at the festival: the Ronnie James Dio Stage, the Sophie Lancaster Stage and the New Blood stage.
Headline acts for have been W.A.S.P, Immortal and Motorhead. Fans were invited to turn up in fancy dress on the Friday, on the theme of Hammer Horror.
